The first answer isn't altogether correct: What most people don't realise is that motor legal protection also covers your insurer pursuing your claim in the event of an accident.
For example, if you had an accident that was either your own fault or a 50/50 claim, your payout may be very little or nothing compared to the value of your car, as your insurer has no vested interest in either paying out or getting the best settlement from the other company.

I found this out to my huge expense many years ago when someone crashed into my car which was parked at the time. No legal protection meant that my insurer had no interest in chasing the other company for a settlement.

It's so cheap, just tick the box.
