Insurance Home Contents

Melissa Said:

How do insurance companies pay your home contents after a fire.?

We Answered:

You still have to make up a list.

But if your coverage limit is $154,000, that's the most you can get.

Yes, you get the depreciated value of your $171,000 up front, and as you replace items, you send in the receipts, and they'll write checks for the recoverable depreciation, until the total amount hits $154,000.

Dorothy Said:

Anyone know home and contents insurance?

We Answered:

The homeowners policy would not be "voided" by an open house event. However, you would have to establish that your loss was the result of theft. Just the fact that something was gone is not enough. Perhaps the item was misplaced. You would have had to have some suspicious circumstances because mysterious disappearance is not covered by your typical policy.

Even if you can reasonably establish that your loss was because of theft your policy has a deductible so if the loss was small it would fall below the deductible.

If the item was jewelry the typical homeowners policy limits the theft loss to $1,000. unless you had the jewelry scheduled on a floater in which case the jewelry would be covered in full and even for mysterious disappearance.

Obviously the answer has to assume a typical policy so call your agent to verify the details of your policy.

Does home contents insurance cover damage to carpet from coal fire?

We Answered:

I work as a public adjuster. if it is a wall to wall carpet and you have an h03 -all risk policy, then it should be covered. if it's a throw rug or area rug. it's harder to get covered.

to decide if you want to claim it. find out what it would cost to replace the carpet and padding vs your deductible. it would be an all risk claim and if the rug is a wall to wall, then it's considered part of the house structure.. a throw rug would be considered contents because you can roll it up and take it with you.

Dorothy Said:

Whta is home contents insurance for exactly?

We Answered:

The laptop would be covered against perils listed in your policy. The basic perils covered would be fire, wind, etc. Theft may or may not be covered as it depends on your policy.
