If you've had continuous health insurance coverage (no break in coverage over 63 days), then you are fine. The HIPAA law protects you. All you have to do is provide your new insurer with proof of sufficient Creditable Coverage from your last policy, and the pre-existing clause should be waived.

If you did go longer than 63 days without health insurance, then you'll have to wait out the pre-existing clause to have coverage for services related to your thyroid condition. (Anything not related to the thyroid issue should be covered as normal.) You'll have to pay out of pocket for your thyroid issues for the first 12 months of the policy. (Or whatever time your policy states...the standard is 12 months, but I've seen policies where its 6 or 9 months.)

After the pre-existing clause expires, your thyroid condition will be covered like normal...that's one of the protections of a group policy through an employer.

(Hopefully you didn't let your insurance lapse though...knowing that you have a medical condition, it would have been wise to have insurance coverage lined up before you were taken off your parents' plan to make sure you didn't have a break in coverage longer than 63 days!)

Unfortunately pet health insurance is just as screwed up as human health insurance in this country. It's run as a business, and taking on a client who has cancer is going to mean spending - not making - money so they aren't going to take your cat on, regardless of how desperate you are or badly in need of help he is. It's cruel and heartless, but it's how the system currently works.

I think it really depends on your priority. Both our political parties, it seems that their top priority is the profits of the handful of corporations that own our health care. Obama's plan, like Clinton's plan, like GHW Bush's plan, puts profits ahead of actual health care. Obama began his campaign promising he'd fight for a single payer plan, but later in the campaign, after accepting money from the health care companies, he changed his mind. He wasn't able to propose anything that might possibly hurt their profits.

The only real answer is public-funded single-payer insurance. Then everyone is covered, all in the same big pool. Some states have 'community pricing' (I think it's called) where insurance companies have to charge everyone the same rates regardless of pre-existing conditions. That's fairer to people with pre-existing conditions, but you still have the problem of people waiting until they get sick before getting insurance. Which I agree is wrong.

There are enormous savings to be had in a single-payer system. All the countries that use this plan--Canada, France, Germany, Australia, etc.--get as good care as we do but pay about half what we do. It's just the most logical way to do it. Let insurance companies sell supplemental insurance for people who have to have a single room in the hospital or whose kids might need orthodontia or something.

When Republicans brag that we have 'the best health care system in the world', what they really mean is that our health care system generates the most profits. And the most political funding.
