If you're insurance company can email you a copy of your insurance certificate (or you may be able to log in to their website) then you can print it out and take it to the post office to get your car tax.

The law was changed to allow home computer print outs on 30 April 2010...

Actually, it is a secured bond. The amount depends on the state, and some do not allow it. You have to deposit many thousands of dollars into escrow. The amount if interest you forgo on such amounts of money is usually greater than the insurance premium you pay. And if you have an accident that is your fault, it is gone. It does not pay for individuals to self-insure, only large entities like cities. Actually, it is a pretty stupid thing for any individual, unless you are a billionaire. One small to medium claim, and you are out an amount of money equal to your insurance premiums for life.

If you you're just going to let the car get crushed then you don't need to insure it at all!

Just take the other documents and point out that the fine is for no insurance and you're not challenging the fact that you're not insured. You can pay the £200 fine at any time - instructions are on the back of the Fixed Penalty Notice.

EDIT:

The producer gives you the opportunity to produce valid insurance if for any reason there was a mistake and you were insured after all when the ticket was issued. You won't be further prosecuted
for not producing insurance - you're just being given the opportunity to right any potential wrong. Your punishment for not being insured is the fine. If you pay up, that'll be the end of it as far as the insurance is concerned.

Do make sure though that you take your test certificate and driving licence (both parts) in to the police station. Failure to do so is a separate offence. People who drive without insurance tend to break other rules such as not having a valid MOT or licence. That's why you've been asked to produce yours at the police station. You don't need to take out insurance just for the purpose of producing it at the police station - it's meaningless. If you were suspected of driving without a licence and you didn't have one, would you suddenly take your driving test?

Doidn't you receive an official renewal notice from your previous insurance company? If so that will have proof of bonus enclosed.

If you did not put in a complaint against your previous insurance (broker/) about failing to provide you with the full renewal information in a durable medium (paper-e-mail) and in good time (21 days) before your policy ran out.

BTW some insurance companies will accept verbal proof of no claims bonus if you provide them with your last policy number and name of the company - they call them and sort that out - of course if you've bought over the internet or with a direct company you can't expect that level of service.

I have never carried them, there is no reason to. If you are stopped by the police you have to produce your licence and insurance at any police station within 5 days, but in 30 years of driving nobody has ever asked to see my licence or insurance.
