Homeowners Insurance Covers

Marc Said:

Renting and house got flooded, does homeowners insurance cover?

We Answered:

The Lessor insures the structure, but unless your lease states otherwise you are to insure the interior and personal contents with renters insurance. Failing that, you likely have no recourse unless the Lessor provided you with the washer/drier which in that case responsibility could fall back to them unless your lease states otherwise.

Any deductible, if it was your equipment that caused the damage, it is your responsibility to correct it. Read your lease, and call your insurance agent.

Roberto Said:

Buying a new home. What will homeowners insurance cover?

We Answered:

Homeowners insurance does NOT cover maintenance items. Maintenance is just part of owning a home, and you have to budget for repairs.

Homeowners covers sudden, accidental things, like a tree landing on a roof, a pipe bursting, heck, a herd of wild elephants on the rampage that trample your house. The standard HO3 covers anything not specifically excluded (hint - flood is excluded on EVERY policy).

But you still have the responsibility to maintain your home.

Homeowners Insurance................?

We Answered:

No

Lee Said:

My Homeowners Insurance covers Godzilla but not floods?

We Answered:

Nope. Flood is excluded on ALL homeowners policies, as is war, and nuclear radiation damages.

And, for the record, if Godzilla is your pet, damages he causes aren't covered, either. Only WILD Godzillas damaging your home are covered.

Pearl Said:

Will homeowners insurance cover taking down trees damaging the foundation of my house?

We Answered:

Doubt it. Homeowners insurance is to repair damage, not perform maintenance. If a tree fell on your house, they would pay to repair the damages.
