Home Emergency Insurance Cover

Joanne Said:

Fidelity National Home Warranty refuses to cover leaking?

We Answered:

If it's only $425.00 why even bother to claim this on your insurance. Hell, your deductible is probably $500.00 anyway. Your insurance will only go up making frivolous claims. Wait for a real emergency.

What to do when your car breaks down 300 miles away from home?

We Answered:

First, since you are working, you probably have a little money in your pocket--enough for a motel for the night, so don't panic, things always look better in the light of day. At the motel, you can look in the phone book for traveler's aid., or call the non-emergency police number and explain your situation and ask their advice. Since you are going HOME, there is probably someone there you can turn to in an emergency, so you aren't totally alone.
Then it depends on how bad your car is broken. But the key is--don't be afraid to ask for help, even if you must pay someone back later. We all break down sometimes, it's a normal part of life, even if unpleasant. Best of luck.

Would I have a valid complaint against my home insurance provider?

We Answered:

I think you have a very strong case. By definition calls to an "emergency" line are urgent, so to leave them unanswered for an hour is unforgiveable. It makes no difference that the insurer has probably been very busy recently. If they offer a service they have to make it available.

Having tried for an hour it would be perfectly reasonable for you to then make your own arrangements. As they are only offering the first £150 of the cost, your choice of tradesman will not affect the cost to the insurer, so their insistence on an approved list is not reasonable. Especially as the longer you waited the more you were likely to have to pay in total.

Contact your insurer's customer service and make your case. If they refuse you will need to contact the insurance ombudsman.

Mom fell and received emergency care but has no insurance?

We Answered:

Quote from Joe "Tell the emergency room that she is from Mexico and they should pick up the tab.

Other than that, your family members should be more loving toward one another and work together. You need to convey that."

I am very sorry to hear that i wish your mom and family best of luck. I will pray that everything works out to be good.

Emergency flight home?

We Answered:

Most US airlines offer bereavement travel. This means they will sell you a discounted ticket in the time of a family emergency. It's up to the individual airline. When my grandma died, I went to the airport and spoke with a supervisor. I was given a first-class American Airlines seat for $100, which was a very nice gesture. But it all depends on the circumstances, the airlines, and their policies.

Can I sue my UK home insurance company?

We Answered:

You can. However, remember L&G are experts at this sort of thing. They're well used to people trying to recover money from them and they know every legal argument & way out of accepting liability. They will try to ensure that the costs you incur in suing them will far exceed any benefit you might gain. Nevertheless, a court might agree that they have failed to live up to their contract and could award you compensation to cover all your costs.
You should start by contacting your nearest Citizens' Advice Bureau.
Keep every receipt, even a note of the cost of travel to & from Homebase and keep a record of everything that has happened, dates times etc. Even cost out your time, including the time you took to read up plumbing techniques from the internet and the time it will take to contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, plus phone calls etc. It sounds as if the water may have damaged the decor of your home, so redecoration should be included, plus the cost of fuel to dry everything out again. You may have to include tradesmen's estimates for non-urgent restoration work. CAB will help you get the details in order & may either help you draft a claim to go in writing to L&G with photocopies of all receipts etc. or suggest a lawyer. Under no circumstance should you send originals of anything to L&G until after they've paid you, otherwise they will simply "lose" all the details then claim you haven't sent anything!
If your direct claim in writing to L&G is unsuccessful, then warn L&G that if they do not pay up within a reasonable deadline - give them about 4 weeks notice - they will also become liable for the cost of recovery. CAB will be able to suggest a reasonably proficient lawyer who will repeat exactly what you've done together with a threat of court action. The lawyer will also add the cost of his/her fees to the claim on L&G. If they do not act reasonably, it will proceed to court.
I hope it doesn't come to that.
Best of luck with your claim.
