Health Insurance That Covers Mental Health

Jose Said:

what does this mean exactly? (insurance mental health question)?

We Answered:

It sounds like you ahve unlimited visits and would pay $10 each time. Howeveer it is best to call the insurance company and ask them first. Some (like mine) require that you get pre approved for psychological therapy... some do not. Call yoru insurance company and ask them or you might get a big surprise in the way of a big bill that they won't pay.

April Said:

Does health insurance cover visits to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or to any mental health counselor?

We Answered:

Most insurance does cover all of the above. When you are shopping, make sure that you ask to see the specs for each insurer's mental health coverage. Especially if you haven't got a long psychiatric history, you will probably get a decent deductible and price.

I have had very good experience with Cigna PPO and Blue Cross PPO.

Louis Said:

My insurance plan doesn't cover mental health and I need a psychologist, what do I do?

We Answered:

Cigna should be separate from Healthy New York and Cigna IS the Mental Health coverage of state plans. So someone is giving you the runaround. However, why do you need a psychologist? The reason I ask that is this: Is it depression? Is it a traumatic experience? Did you have a head injury? In other words, is it something you can see a NEUROpsychologist for. If so, then the standard is that a NEUROpsychologist is NOT mental health, it is covered under Health/Medical because they test to arrive at a MEDICAL (not mental) diagnosis. If Cigna sent you the list then they do cover those psychologists. Stick with it until you get satisfaction. Cigna, like I said, is the mental health network offshoot of medical plans.

***ADDED NOTE:*** - Do you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through work? If you do, seek out the EAP Program Coordinator. They can help you. I would say that your last resort is to find someone and set up a Payment Plan with the billing department (as long as you do that and you're paying "something - I think the lowest is $10/mo) on your bill then they can't sue you.

Brenda Said:

Are there any mental health treatment centers in Canada that are government funded or are covered by insurance?

We Answered:

Treatment centers: Pine Lodge past Regina - Calder (Saskatoon) - Agnes Campbell in Moose Jaw - Slim Thorpe in Lloydminister - THESE are all in Saskatchewan - Pine Lodge is the toughest because I experienced it for a month - no cost to me - but here you have to get a referal from Addiction Services - all these centers should be on the web - good luck!!

Glen Said:

Mental health is not covered by health insurance what are other options?

We Answered:

If you are on a medication you can call the company that makes it and they often will give you a discount on the price and sometimes supply it to you for free. Also if you can change insurance to something that covers mental health, I would. It sure doesn't make sense that they don't cover mental health like they do all other health issues. mental health is a physical problem of the brain, so it really makes me mad that they don't consider this.

Lee Said:

Is it possible to get mental health insurance alone?

We Answered:

I am not aware of any insurance programs specifically catering to mental health, but I would suggest looking into a community mental health center--they often work on a sliding scale basis and only charge what you can afford based on your income.

Also, if you do choose to seek a psychiatrist for medication, many doctors will charge a reduced rate for patients paying cash (in my case, I pay 75-80 dollars per session, once every 3 months). There are also many prescription assistance programs available through drug companies so you may likely be able to qualify for free medication if you find that you need it.
