IVF health insurance?

I've had Aetna and I've questioned Cigna about their plans, I'm not too sure what is offered in your area. These 2 insurances that I mentioned both offer a $5000 lifetime limit of fertility treatment. With Aetna they would cover 80% of whatever treatment I had to under go, and I had to pay 20%, once you reach $5000 (between you and your partner) then you have to pay full cost out of pocket. Cigna offers the same, but I was told they don't do the 80% and 20% thing.. they just pay the full amount until it hits $5000. Now that the first person has mentioned Blue Cross and Blue Shield, I may have to call, because I am actually now with them, and have just started benefits through them .. Anyways your answer for the most part is, that most insurances do NOT cover infertility. Some may cover a small portion, but please ask before you do it.

does anyone on here have or had a health insurance that covered or at least partly covered IVF? please help?

We Answered:

Currently ONLY 15 states in the US mandate some sort of fertility coverage. You can check on the Resolve website to see if your state is one of them . . . it is really more about what is mandated for coverage in your state than the insurance company - for instance BC/BS in Massachusetts (where I live) covers IVF but BC/BS in Florida does not.

I also recommend that you contact Fertility Life lines - they have a free hotline that you can call and have someone help you to better understand your coverage and to do an analysis for you. They were great - gave them my policy info and they researched it, got me all of the info on what was and was not covered and explained it to me. They also have information on prescription programs and shared risk programs.

If you cannot find insurance coverage here are some other suggestions:

1) Start with the RE - most doctors have a team that can help you with finding ways to pay for your treatment - they are amazing at figuring out your insurance benefits, coming up payment plans and may even be able to recommend medical studies / clinical trials that you may be able to participate in.

2) Grants -there are groups out there that fund raise for fertility treatments - you need to apply and cross your fingers.

3) Loans - banks and credit card companies (my friend used Capital One) offer fertility loans with fair interest rates and payment plans. Maybe see if you can borrow from a family member.

4) Serious budgeting - I also know couples who have taken part time / seasonal jobs to save up for treatments, sold things on ebay etc . . .

5) See if your employer as a flex spending account - you can set aside money tax free for medical things - everything from IVF to prescriptions to eye glasses etc . . .

I am looking for a health insurance provider in Australia that covers IVF treatment. Help?

We Answered:

I'm in Australia and 2 of our friends have gone through IVF to fall pregnant.

One went through Medicare and got reimbursed for about 80% of her costs once she had reached over the safety net amount (about $1000). The other friend went through medibank (i think) and because they were private patients, they had alot more costs they had to fork out for the same treatments (and mind you the same doctor) as the first friend did. Not sure of how much she got back but just ring around and see how you go.

All the best with the treatments
