Doris Said:

does aetna health insurance cover pregnancy costs (checkups and delivery)?

We Answered:

You'll need to contact Aetna and find out whether your prenatal care and delivery will be covered. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield through my mom, and they would not cover any prenatal care for me. I ended up having to get on Medicaid, which pays for all prenatal care and delivery.

Ross Said:

Will a guys health insurance cover his girlfriends pregnancy?

We Answered:

That is really an interesting question. I checked with my insurance rep on this to get you good ifnormation.

He can not get coverage for the girlfriend unless they are married. However, if he were to marry her then he could add her and there would be no pre-existing condition issues for pregnancy.

Alternatively, if he does not marry the girlfriend and the baby is born, he can add the baby to his health insurance and get coverage for just the child.

However, he has 31 days to add the baby onto a group policy or he loses out. Alternatively, he could always add the child during the open enrollment period as well I would assume.

Hope that helps!

Can I purchase extra health insurance to cover my WHOLE pregnancy?

We Answered:

It's probably not worth your while to pay the premiums on this additional coverage, if your coinsurance is only 10%. Does your employer (or your spouse's) offer an FSA (flexible spending account)? If so, elect to defer the amount that you will be responsible for, and take advantage of the tax break that it offers you. Don't worry if you sign up for 2009 for a small amount (just to make sure you're signed up for it) and then get pregnant with a 2009 due date--this is considered a qualifying event and you can increase your deferral. The key is to be signed up. Don't forget, you can use your FSA funds for over-the-counter meds and first aid supplies, so if you defer money and don't use it all, stock up on first aid supplies, cold meds, etc in December.
