He can try to arrange a payment plan to pay the balance over a period of time. Most people and insurance companies will accept that because it keeps it out of the courts which are expensive and time consuming.

Also, make sure he increases his liability limits on his policy!

Car insurance excess?

We Answered:

In the USA, there are various types of auto insurance coverages within a single policy. All have maximum dollar limitations which the insurance company pays up to that total $$ amount for a single accident and any excess over insurance limitation is responsibility of the policy holder,

Where policy holder is an fault in an accident whether it is another vehicle or say a structure, then such damage paid by the insurance company is covered under PROPERTY DAMAGE up to the $$ amount of coverage purchased or the renewal amount.

For damage to to be repaired by a body shop on the policyholder's own vehicle, repair is covered by COLLISION coverage limitation $$ amount but often policyholders reduce insurance costs by carrying higher deductibles they are willing to pay out of pocket first. That being said, the best COLLISION coverage still requires $100 deductible to be paid first by policy holder.

Yes, COLLISION coverage for poor driver is expensive but another insurance coverage that was not mentioned and is very costly is BODILY LIABILITY COVERAGE that is the amount that say you are in accident and individuals are injured and require medical treatment, doctors and/or hospitalization, then such expanses are even more costly and far exceed property damage or colllision and policy holder can be sued (yes even losing your house & assets) if medical costs were excessive.

Hope the Above Info Helps!
