Dog Insurance Lifetime Cover

Dog Insurance Question?

We Answered:

Hi,

I have insured my Dobermanns with Petplan for years on the Supreme plan. The excess is £65.00 for each dog.

I wouldn't be without insurance as I like the peace of mind that if anything happens I can easily pay whatever veterinary bills that my Dobes might have.

Beau's bill totalled over £12,000 for aggressive skin cancer, he also had regular medication for arthritis.

Becca had emergency surgery for open pyometra £800.00, an operation to remove a low grade tumour on her leg and ongoing treatment for thyroid.

Tori had surgery for a punctured paw, test for thyroid and spayed for medical reasons....the list goes on....

Petplan paid up quickly, so definitely worth the money.

How easy would it be to find thousands of pounds if your dog needed treatment for cancer? Or emergency veterinary treatment? I would never want to be in the position that I couldn't offer my Dobes the best treatment to give them a good quality of life because of the cost.

Lifetime dog insurance... which is best?

We Answered:

I personally believe that unless you are seriously hurting for money, don't care for your dog well, or have a high risk dog, then putting that £36/month in a savings account for an emergency is the best plan.

In 5 years at 1.25% interest rate in a savings account, with a £100 starting point and depositing that £36/month , you would have £2,348.77. Where I am, that's a pretty hefty emergency cushion. In 7 years, it's £3,288.12, and in 10 years, £4,741.65. Once the economy corrects a little more, interest rates in savings accounts will increase.

When to make that final decision as your dogs life is coming to a close........?

We Answered:

My heart goes out to you...I would not like to be faced with such a decision. And I couldn't possibly give you a recommendation, I wouldn't want that on my conscience (sorry if that sounds a bit selfish).
You know your dog, and you will know the right decision to make. Trust it and go with it, and don't ever feel regret for the option you abandoned, whether that be euthanising her or letting her carry on. Take some comfort from the fact that you have control over the situation. You can make all the necessary arrangements and ensure she goes with dignity and respect, and have the opportunity to give her a final farewell without leaving it to the hands of fate.

Good luck and God bless.

Dog Insurance - Existing Condition?

We Answered:

I do not know much about pet insurance, but i will make a recommendation for your dog. Its sad that these problems are so mad at this age. Its most likely due to poor bloodlines. Give your dog glucosamine pills with every meal. They are more liek treats than pills to dogs. My dog has a hip problem and she is doing wonders with glucosamine pills for dogs. Think of it as lube for the joints. You can get them at almost any pet store. Online I would definitely recommend Drsfostersmith.com Best site for animal products. Great prices and excellent customer service. They are not exactly "CHEAP" but for what they do they are not expensive either. These pills will work wonders. Give it a month. Follow the dosage on the pills. Your dog will feel extremely better. Mine does. :)
