Eduardo Said:

how much does it cost for a man to reverse a vasectomy?

We Answered:

How much does it cost? Depends on who, how, and where they perform the reversal. The first link I give you below is to a site that features doctors who do the reversal as a ministry. Prices can be as little as $1800 total cost. Some doctors though charge $15,000. Why the difference? Some doctors do it at a hospital and then you do have to pay for each step of the process separately. Our reversal cost us $7000 total. That was for everything. Our doctor was Dr. Douglas Schow of Woodbury, MN. He uses general anesthesia and is a microsurgeon who has his own clinic. What are the percentages that you can have another child after the reversal? Usually around 50% on up to 75%. It really depends on how old the vasectomy is at the time of reversal and of course, whether you use a microsurgeon who is skilled and does reversals on a daily basis. My second link is a neutral site (not some doctor's site) that lists sperm return and pregnancy rates after reversal. Does insurance cover this? Only in cases of severe post vasectomy pain syndrome. Let's face it. Reversal is an elective surgery. And it's rather expensive. So no, insurance companies won't typically cover this type of procedure. It's kind of like a person wanting a boob job verses a woman getting plastic reconstruction after mastectomy. For just an enhancement, an insurance company typically won't pay for it, but if it's because you lost your breast to cancer, then they will. What are opinions on pain and all that? Most men who have had reversal will say it's about the same in pain as having the vasectomy. A rare few will say the pain is less, and some say the pain is more. It does take a longer time to recover from though because it is an extremely delicate operation that you don't want scar tissue building up in. So you have to refrain from lifting and excercise for about a month. But if you have a desk job, a man can certainly go back to work within 5 days. For my hubby, he said the reversal was easier than the vasectomy; but he had a rough vasectomy that resulted in PVPS. I think you should search engine the net on your own and maybe join a vasectomy reversal support message board. There are several around and you will find that vasectomies are reversible and that many children are born after vasectomy reversals. The pictures on the doctor's walls are real along with the stories behind them. Do you really think that in America a medical doctor could make these claims without proof behind them? The doctors that have been doing reversals for years are real and certainly you should find one that the AMA supports. Do your research and take the reversal journey. BTW, I should add that we have a 2 year old reversal son which was conceived on our third cycle of ttc'ing.

Sally Said:

does anyone know of any health insurance that will cover a vasectomy reversal?

We Answered:

Not likely. Lets look at this logically. You pay something like 5K a year in premiums. The surgery will cost (with all the follow-ups) something like twice that. Then there is the cost of IVF as that is almost always required because reversals seldom work on their own. That is about 27K. Then a delivery room costs about 10K.

There will be no baby for at least three years. In that time you will pay in maybe 15K in premiums. But they will have to pay 47k. It does not make business sense.

Chester Said:

Does a vasectomy hurt? Does health insurance cover this surgery?

We Answered:

I assume you are a man because you are asking about a vasectomy.

No it does not hurt as long as you follow instructions. I got mine on a Friday, and was back to work on Monday (I was not working a job that required lifting).

I got mine when I was 21. No I never had children. I went to a non profit clinic, and paid cash. It was $250. But that was 1989.

I hear it cost about $600 at the average non-profit clinic today. Insurance will cover it if you go to a regular urologist.

I had to lie about having children to get mine. I told the truth when I went to the first two, and they refused me.

Just remember, if you are young, single, or don't have kids, you will have to lie. Tell the clinic that you are married, and have children, or they won’t do it. No it is not breaking the law. You have to do this because the clinic will try to force its morals on you. I know several other men that did the same, and were successful.

BTW: A vasectomy is only 99.5% effective.
