Mobile phone insurance?

We Answered:

Yes it would normally be covered but you need to look at your policy and check the list of exclusions.

What is considered 'accidental damage' according to Endsleigh Insurance?

We Answered:

Accidental damage cover is almost the same whatever company you use - it basically covers a sudden or unexpected incident that has not been caused deliberately but results in damage to property. So, in this case yes, that is accidental damage. If it had just stopped working then that would be wear and tear, but dropping it is accidental damage. However, you need to make sure that your camera is covered and not named in the list of exclusions, although it is unlikely to be an excluded item.
What you have to remember is that your Insurer doesn't have to replace the camera - they could have it repaired if a repair is possible and financially viable. And you have to pay the excess. It might be worth taking it to a repairer first - if it can be repaired for less than the cost of your excess then it isn't worth making a claim. If it's too expensive to repair or irreparable than consider a claim and contact your Insurer. Alternatively, ring your Insurer and discuss it with them.

Personal Contents Insurance?

We Answered:

If you were actually living at home with your parents in the US, their policy would cover any of your stuff since you are a member of the household (no matter what your age). Check with their insurance agent if this applies in Australia as well. If it does not or if you feel that you still need your own policy, then go to the insurance agent and get a renter's policy. In the US, a renter's policy is considered to be a particular type of homeowners policy, but it just covers your liability for loss to others and your possessions (contents). A renter's policy in AUS appears to pretty much cover the same stuff as one in the US covers. (Precise details would be different, but it is an available policy in AUS.) In the US, we have the other option of a specific type of Inland Marine coverage that provides coverage for personal property only. However, I did not see anything on the AUS sites about insurance coverage concerning Personal Inland Marine coverage. (And what I did see about Commercial IM coverage in AUS did not appear that it could be used in the many and varied ways as it can be in the US.)

In any case, work with your parents' insurance agent. He should be able to tell you if you actually need your own coverage. If you do, it would be reasonable to work with their agent so that you can get your needs properly coordinated. What coverage you would need should not cost you very much.
