Does Car Insurance Cover Theft

Leo Said:

does full coverage auto insurance cover theft of the car?

We Answered:

Read your policy. If it talks about "Fire, theft, collision" it does.

But, your insurance won't cover theft if you didn't take "standard precautions" to protect the vehicle. If it was stolen out of your driveway, and was locked, you are probably okay. If you parked it in a not desirable neighborhood with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition, you are probably not covered.

Leslie Said:

Why do car insurance companies not cover theft from a broken sunroof?

We Answered:

Because car insurance covers the CAR. If you had "stuff" in the car, that someone took, that would be covered under your renters or homeowners insurance.

Phillip Said:

does auto insurance cover theft of vehicle if you leave keys in car?

We Answered:

Yes, you are covered. Be honest with your insurance company, don't start making up silly stories when you are asked how many sets of keys you have, and there whereabouts. They may refer the file over to their Special Investigation Unit, to determine if you were having a difficult time making your payments, and you were some how involved with the theft of your vehicle.
