Sadly the Tricare United Concordia dental insurance doesn't cover everything, you actually do have to pay a pretty big cost share.

I signed up about a year ago, if you do it online you have to fill out a lot of info bout your spouse and wait for them to mail you a confirmation after they check your info. I think the cut off was like the 20th of the month, if you sign up on the 21st or later you have to wait until the next month til your coverage can take affect. They might not approve you until he gets out of basic as a graduate (just in case he purposely went and fails just so you could of got that coverage for those 2 months.)
My husband is active duty (E6), I had oral surgery done (wisdom theeth removal), United concordia paid 40% ($600), I had to pay 60% ($700).

As person said above, they do pay $1500 for braces MAX. Doesn't matter how necessary they are. I got braces put on and its pretty much purely cosmetic, they are paying the $1500, I had to pay the rest ($1900). I heard though that if your over 23 they wont pay any orthodontist treatment, so just make sure you visit an ortho asap to get started before then!

Have fun being a military spouse :) It gets hard, but don't worry, there will always be other spouses around to help.

Lori S. is pretty-much right. There is more to it than that, depending on your policy. I would read both dental certificates (yours and your wife's) under 'coordination of benefits' section and that should answer your question as to how it is specifically handled in your instance.
There are too many variables in plans to be more specific than what Lori S. explained.

Finding a dental insurance plan that cover orthodontics is almost impossible. Even if you do there will be a waiting period of 12 to 24 months before you could get orthodontics covered. Also, most dental plans will only pay out $750 to $1500 per year so you'd still be paying a lot for the braces.

You do have other options, though.

2. Discount plans - Cost - $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount (even though they advertise "up to 80%), which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. 3. Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you for most procedures.

You should get your information about your health options first hand from licensed insurance providers. You can give Americas Health Brokers a call. You can search their main site and number. So far, they have dental insurance coverage that I would safely say offers the best. They got me covered.
