Contents Insurance Cover

Allison Said:

Does Norwich Union contents insurance cover iPhones?

We Answered:

We can assume you have inland marine insurance. This means that what is insured (like a phone) floats from one location to another. (It has nothing to do with floating in a washing machine.)

You caused the problem. [Note, please, that when I washed my pants with the cell phone inside, I opened it, took out the battery, and let it cook in the Las Vegas sun for a few days. It worked fine!]

My immediate guess is that you are covered. The deductible may hurt, but at least anything over the deductible should be covered.

I hope.

Good luck!

Wayne Said:

How much contents insurance cover should you get for a 3 bed semi with the usual family contents?

We Answered:

If you're a home owner, then you should have had a mortgage insurance. If you're renting, you should consider what will it cost you to replace everything you have in your home in today's market. Most people usually buy $20,000 renter's insurance to cover everything. This would be enough for most people.

Tamara Said:

Does home and contents insurance cover a lost/stolen mobile phone?

We Answered:

Call the taxi company and find out if the phone was turned in by the driver. The taxi company should be able to determine what car you were in.

As far as homeowners insurance goes....unless the phone is scheduled on the policy (and it's probably not) there is no coverage for a lost phone.

If you claim it stolen....you have to file a police report.

Your deductible will apply. Usually a deductible is 500 or 1000. (using 500 as an example) the deductible means that your boyfriend agrees to pay the first 500 of damage if the insurance company pays after that.

So....if the phone is $350 and the deductible is $500 - the insurance company will not pay out anything.....the loss does not exceed the deductible.

If the phone is $600 and the deductible is $500 - then the insurance company will only pay $100.

Odds are, the value of the phone is less than the deductible.

Samantha Said:

Does contents insurance cover carpet damage?

We Answered:

If you have accidental damage cover on your contents insurance then you may be covered. However, they can be awkward about things like this: the stain was accidental, the damage caused by scrubbing is deliberate. Also, as you are a tenant, it depends on what you are actually covered for - did you cover all contents or just things that belong to you? The carpet obviously belongs to the landlord. You also need to look at your policy excess as these two stains are obviously two separate incidents and therefore two lots of policy excess will apply, and your premium will increase. So you need to work out whether it's better just to let the landlord keep your deposit.
If you don't already have insurance and are thinking that you can get insured then make a claim - forget it, it won't work! I work for a company that does restoration work as an insurance approved repairer and I can tell you now that we would spot a fraudulent claim like that from a mile off!

Would house contents insurance usually cover mobile phones?

no, you would need extra cover for mobile phones

Alice Said:

does home and contents insurance cover spy satellites tumbling out of orbit and landing on your house?

We Answered:

It would depend on what policy form you purchased but -

if you had a standard homeowners policy - most likely it would be a covered loss.

The homeowners policy does cover falling objects -- and that's what a spy satellite falling from the sky is. However, it does exclude acts or decisions - including failure to act of any government body.

The contents section of most policies is named peril. There is a peril for falling objects. In order for contents inside the home to be covered - the falling object has to create a hole in the structure.

The contents section also has a named peril of "Aircraft" which is defined as "This includes self propelled missiles and spacecraft."

Although it really depends on the language in your policy - I suspect that most standard homeowners policies would provide coverage for this loss.

Bradley Said:

As a private tenant, should my contents insurance cover the landlord's furnishings?

We Answered:

The lease should tell you whether you have an express obligation to ensure. If not then you should insure anyway assuming that you will be liable for any loss or damage to these items.

Either way, you should inform the insurance company that some of the property to be covered belongs to your landlord.

Discuss It!
