Whether a tax return shows a refund due or a balance due does not affect the odds of an audit. Returns are selected for audit based upon a statistical analysis of the information on the return compared to other returns showing similar incomes, job titles, geographic area, etc. as well as a review of the return for certain fraud indicators.

I've prepared returns with a balance due that were selected for audit. I also prepared one about 30 years ago that had a refund due of over $1,000,000 that sailed through unscathed and was never questioned by the IRS.

The IRS does not publicize the statistical factors used in selecting returns for audit, however many tax prep firms do publicize block data on earnings, deductions, and credits. It's fairly safe to assume that a return with numbers that fall significantly outside of the average will have a higher odds of audit than one that falls in the middle of the range.

Certain fraud indicators don't take a forensic accountant with a PhD to figure out. A return showing just enough self-employment income to qualify for a maximum EIC payment is pretty much a guaranteed audit. So is a return claiming deductions for gambling losses or a home office deduction.

You can try to appeal, just write them a letter explaining the situation, but that doesn't mean they will up your financial aid. (I have to go through college with zero financial support from my parents, even though they aren't broke. I also could not find a summer job, but in the end, I still have to live with my situation.) Other options, 1) don't bring your car unless you live at home, 2) don't get a meal plan, 3)buy textbooks online and sell your old ones online, NOT on campus, 4) take less classes, 5) work while attending school!

Wow!!! That's a tough question. I sure as heck wouldn't want to make that decision. What would you do? I'm going to star this one, this is the best question I have seen in weeks. As a matter of fact the only Real question concerning politics that I have seen on this site.
We need jobs to get insurance but can't find jobs. Without insurance I guess if you get hurt you will just have to bleed to death? Without a job I guess you just have to STARVE to death? You can't do a dam thing without a job. When you loose your job you become scum to the people that used to kiss your butt when you had one. Without insurance just means the longer you set and wait to see a doctor or the longer you spend in the ER waiting room. Trust me I know. I was let go without notice after 39 yrs with them. I had great insurance and had 1 sick day in the last12 yrs. Now that my job is gone my wife and I both have been sick and to the hospital. I had never been treated the way I was treated at the hospital, as a matter of fact I left because in 9hrs on the er table I was seen once for approx. 30 secs. AH good ol USA. I served my country 1969-1972. I don't take are want any benefits from uncle sam.
