As you are from the US, you'll need to deal with a company that also operates in the US in case there are any ongoing repercussions should you have a claim. You could perhaps arrange it with your usual insurance broker, but a policy drwn up in the States, won't allow for New Zealnd conditions.
The easiest option therefore is to take the insurance offered by the car rental company. It will be concise and straightforward.
But, make sure you read it through prior to signing it, and cross out, question, or replace any clauses that will unfairly disadvantage you.
Be aware that the insurance will not cover you on some roads, eg: Ball Hut Rd, Rainbow Road, Skippers Road, Milford Road, any beach (most of which are designated public roads), the Russell Coast Road, and a few others - they are listed on the policy.
Most companies likewise do not allow their cars to travel on roads that are not a sealed surface.
There are cheaper car rental companies than the big three. However the big three companies (in general) are the only ones that offer new cars, that is cars with no more than 50 000km on the clock. At that milage those cars are then on-sold to the other companies who may run them up to 200 000 km.

If you are legally entitled to keep your California registration, then you keep your California insurance for the time you are in Canada. You do have to notify your insurance company of your temporary re-location of course. Of course, you have not imported your car, it is a visitor as well, so you cannot sell it or trade it in while you are on temporary permit.

my suggestion would be to buy a years worth, and then cancel when youre done. try and find someone who will let you cancel within a month without losing any more than youve used, as many have a system where you lose a lot more than youve used by cancelling. if you cant find one just check how much you get back after 1 month (inc admin fees). for reference, the youngest person tempcover insures, on a newish hyundai i10 costs £150 a month, or £20 for a day.

Does your boyfriend have full coverage on his own car...if so...his insurance should cover the damages. If he only has liability on his car...then they will not pay for anything on his friends car.

It looks like your BF might be paying for a car that he does not own and he can no longer drive. His friend's insurance will have to pay for any damages to whatever your BF hit...because they are responsible for that....but not the damages to the friend's car.
