Car Insurance Legal Cover

Judith Said:

car insurance!! what does Legal Cover means?

We Answered:

Hello

Legal Cover means that the insurance includes legal representation in case of an accident (Lawyer) These days about £30
Minimum Insurance cover is Third Party Only and only covers the other vehicle if you caused the accident. This is the minimum allowed by law.
Third Part Fire and Theft is the same but also covers your Vehicle should it catch Fire or is Stolen.
Fully Comprehensive means that your car is also covered for repairs if you cause an accident.

Personally I would get it, It can save you a lot of hassle
Some companies will include it as standard in Full Comp Policies

James Said:

I pay extra for legal cover on my car insurance and also on my home insurance,am I paying twice?

We Answered:

No. One is for home and one is for car. A completely separate set of risks.
Quick lesson: Motor legal insurance covers pursuit of uninsured losses and damages after a non fault accident. The home cover is a selection of risks as a home owner. These will be listed. Your home policy (under buildings) will cover property owners liability ie risks as a property owner and the contents section will cover your family liability as occupants and will extends to cover things like pets, crashing bicycles etc. There will be a list of exclusions.

Joy Said:

what does legal cover mean in car insurance?

We Answered:

It should be a separately underwritten insurance policy to cover any legal costs that may be incurred in pursuing a claim for uninsured losses (excess, injury etc) following an accident when someone else is at fault.

If you are being charged this check that the insurer/ broker is actually offering an insurance policy rather than making a charge 'because everyone else does' and then farm the work out to a local solicitor.

George Said:

I was in a car accident this morning, but have no legal cover on my car insurance - what do I do?

We Answered:

UK reply

It sounds an open and shut case - other driver 100% at fault.

Any of the no win no fee ambulance chasers solicitors will take the case under these circumstances as they arer 99% certain to win. Beware though - some of them take 40% of your damages!

Nicholas Said:

My car was written off in a flood is there anyway to avoid paying insurance excess without legal protection?

We Answered:

You agree to the excess when you agree to the policy. The excess is to stop people making small claims which might cost more in administration than they are worth. The excess amount can be variable depending on you premium (lower excess, higher premium) anddifferent risks have different excesses. If the loss or damage is caused by a third party then you can claim the cost of replacement or damage plus the excess. But in the case of a flood then there is no 3rd party (only God). Legal protection only helps you recover uninsured losses (like excess, cost of courtesy car etc.) but again I don't know if you would be covered unless there was a 3rd party.

Kevin Said:

Do I need Legal Cover when taking out Comprehensive car insurance??

We Answered:

I would talk with your insurance agent because Comprehensive Insurance covers "SEE BELOW".

Pays for losses to your covered auto (up to its actual cash value) which are not caused by collision. This includes damage caused by fire, theft, glass breakage, riot, windstorm and hail. The amount of your deductible will be subtracted from any settlement.

Example: Vandals break your windshield and spray paint on you car. Comprehensive coverage will pay to restore your vehicle to the condition it was in prior to the incident. You pay only the deductible amount
