LIfecover is only needed if you wish to leave something to someone or if you have debts to pay them off instead of them maybe going into your estate. For instance if you have a mortgage, car, other loans and you die then your wife is left with the pressure of paying them. So, take out a joint policy on 1st death and take it out for more than what you owe.
Criticial illness is more important for you as if something happens to you and you live how is you bills getting paid. Also if you are in need of an operation and needing to go private the money would be there. Please note there is only a limited amount of companies that does good cover so seek advice. Just because you have cover does not mean your are covered. Seek advice. My advice - insure yourself (Critical Illness, Income Protection) so you can live financially if something happens.
