Backpacker Insurance Cover

Michele Said:

Backpacker/long term travel insurance?

We Answered:

I don't know of anything that will cover the loss of the valuables, but travel insurance is readily available for the trek. You can look at the links on my site for companies.

Backpacker Insurance, I am going travelling for 6 months and looking to buy my insurance...?

We Answered:

When you’re travelling for longer periods it does need a bit of thought than a two week jaunt to Benidorm. The big difference is with a short term policy you can usually wait till you get home and sort out a claim/reimbursement then. This isn’t so great if you’re 3 months into a 6 month trek through South East Asia, so you are wise to be wary.

A couple of thoughts…..

Regions covered:
Does the policy actually cover you for the countries you are or might be visiting (let’s face it, half the fun of backpacking is being spontaneous)

Repatriation:
Will they fly you home in case of real emergency?

Excess:
How much do you have to pay before the insurance kicks in?

Local Assistance: (A big difference between 6 months and 2 weeks travelling)
Is the insurer part of an worldwide assistance scheme where you can get help from a local office? This costs more, but if something does happen you have a local office with people who understand local language, customs etc to help you. (You’re not relying on a call centre in Crawley) These schemes also tend to be better at advancing you emergency funds if required. Some policies you have to pay first and then reclaim, fine for a case of the runs in Corfu, not so good for broken wrist in Kuala Lumpur with your credit card maxed out.

Exceptions:
What is covered, does the policy exclude scuba diving/snorkelling/skiing etc (throwing down some shapes on Samui?). Obviously you only need this if you plan on doing any of those things, but the point is make sure you are covered for what you will be doing.

Just some thoughts… have a great time … oh and 1 tip… scan your insurance paperwork and email it to yourself before you leave> That way even if you lose your paperwork, wherever you are in the world you can print a copy from the nearest internet café.

Going to Europe for approx 8 months - what travel insurance should I get?

We Answered:

You just need a travel medical insurance policy. It won't cover you in your home country (for the most part) and you don't have to prove anything.
