Accident Insurance Cover

Stella Said:

Does your primary car insurance extend to rental cars?If so, does it really cover all expenses of an accident?

We Answered:

There are two types of coverage on your auto policy, liability, and physical damage (that would be collision and comprehensive). In most states, the liability will carry over onto a TEMPORARY SUBSTITUTE vehicle, such as a rental car. Physical damage does NOT necessarily carry over, though.

In either case, LOSS OF USE for the rental car, while it's in the shop, is NOT covered under your policy. In my experience, if you return a car with a scratch, the "loss of use" time for repair is about 3-4 days, and your credit card WILL be charged for that 3-4 days, EVEN IF THE REPAIR IS NEVER MADE.

So, primary insurance FOR THE NAMED INSURED will carry over in most cases, for liability coverage. In many cases, also for collision and comprehensive (although some companies like Progressive specifically do NOT transfer physical damage to a temporary substitute vehicle). But loss of rents is NEVER covered.

You'll have to check with your credit card company, but I've never heard of one covering loss of rents, either.

Now, the bottom line - I do NOT recommend my clients buy that waiver coverage they like to sell, UNLESS you're renting a vehicle out of the country. Then, the whole international thing is just too much of a pain to deal with (I'm NOT going to tell you horror stories, but it's bad), and just to save the $5 a minute international charges to Europe, you're going to want to buy it.

Peter Said:

Will the insurance company cover my accident on a rental car?

We Answered:

If you rent a car in your friend's name, then your friend is renting the car. If you are not named as a driver, the rental company can hit your friend with extra fees that should have been charged. If CDW was purchased, you would not be covered as you are not a named driver. Also, most car companies won't rent to people under 25. So, you and your friend may have some big civil issues that you'll have to contend with when the rental car company finds out.

Also, it's possible that your friends insurance won't cover the damage to the car and neither will your dad's insurance and neither would the benefits of the credit card used (some credit cards cover rental car damage).

If you rent a car and have an accident, regardless of fault, you better have collision and comprehensive of sufficient value to cover the damages. If you have a cheap car at home that's worth $10,000, but you rent a $80,000 luxury car, your insurance will only cover up to the value of the car at home unless you buy a rider for the increased value of the rental.

VISA's site below gives a host of restrictions that you would violate should you have an accident. And believe me, Murphy's Law will come into effect.

Deborah Said:

I got in a car accident and my amps and subs were damaged in the accident will the insurance cover it?

We Answered:

If you are claiming on your own policy, you would have to have additional coverage for the aftermarket equipment. If you don't have that coverage, then your company will not pay for them.

If you are claiming w/ the other carrier, you will have to let them know you are claiming amps and subs. They will inspect and determine if damage is related to the loss. They may or may not cover.
