Wade Said:

How can I become as sucessful as the next guy/girl.?

We Answered:

Well full marks for determination at 14! But I suspect that your ambitions are clouded by some day dreaming as well. You are filling your mind with a veritable pot pourri of achievements that somehow don't gel together. My advice? I suggest that you work at one ambition at a time, see where that takes you, and build on that. Your lust for success is great but you have a long way to go and I simply suggest that you take things slowly or you may become depressed that your dreams are not happening all at once. And, as a last word of encouragement, simply follow your heart at all times .... your higher self will guide you through all of this. Good luck ........

I want to work in statistical analysis in the sports/betting industry. Has anybody heard of ATASS Sports?

We Answered:

My first question would be, do you know what the job involves? Its good that you are a sports fan and have a mathematical background, but what do you know about this job?

I would suggest your first step therefore is not sending out CV's, but looking for what are termed Informational Interviews. These are undertaken actively by job seekers into organisations that they may be interested in/may want to work for, where there is no specific job advertised. The informational interview is very popular in North America, but in light of the current recession are also the solution becoming popular with UK graduates and wise job seekers to find suitable employment in areas they may not have first thought of.

Using the informational interview technique, you create a list of all organisations in the desired market, including specialists like atass and the major betting chains. There are two main tactics to making an approach to an organisation:
1. Write an eMail or pick up the phone and approach the HR department. Explain that you are interested in their organisation as a potential employer in the area of X, and that you would like an informational interview with someone actually doing that job
2. Networking: either join the leading industry organisation, or look around somewhere like LinkedIn, for operational people who work in this industry. Again, approach along the lines of "I am trying to find out about your organisation/job, and wonder if you could spare me 15minutes to chat through what you do."

Most organisations and people will say yes to this approach, as candidates checking them out or paying them some attention they see as interesting and flattering.

The outcome of the informational interview is three fold:
- You have a nice conversation, but know that organisation/job is not for you
- You have a nice conversation, but that organisation is not right for you/don't do that sort of thing, but they will introduce you to someone who does
- The person you talk to asks you in for a job interview, or makes a recommendation to someone else who does have a job

The outcome hence is that you are an insider. Using the informational interview avoids cold calling and spamming many with your CV, gives you an insiders view on the job and the organisations involved, and makes employers aware of your presence in a warming and professional way. Success ratios with informational interviews to employment are in the range of 1 in 6 or better, using cold calling or spamming those will drop to 1 in 30 to 50 or worse.

The informational interview: a useful tool for checking out a possible employment path and gaining an inside track.

Good Luck!

Can you cancel car insurance and get a refund?

We Answered:

If you are paying in installments you haven't actually bought insurance.
Just phone them to cancel the policy, I did that with my wife's car insurance and they didn't ask for the full amount.
