Independent Insurance Agent

Heidi Said:

How does someone become an independent insurance agent after you have your licensence?

We Answered:

You will need to contact the insurance companies and try to find some that are willing to let you sell their policies. You will then need to get contracted through those companies. Many companies will sell through independent agents but some will require a track record first. Most people find it helpful to start out working with another agent until you get your feet wet.

How to become an independent insurance agent in Michigan?

We Answered:

From the MIchigan Financial and Insurance Regulation web site -

A license is a privilege, not a right. To receive and maintain a license in Michigan, an insurance producer (commonly referred to as an insurance agent) must be at least 18 years old, must complete any pre-licensing and continuing education required by law, must successfully pass any examinations required by law, and must not have committed any of the 14 acts that are listed as causes for license denial or revocation in MCL 500.1239.

As noted above you must complete pre-licensing courses. If you are seeking a life & health or a property & casualty license you will be required to complete 40 hours of course study. PE coursework is approved in Michigan for classroom and correspondence. Either is acceptable.

After completing the PE course work the licensing candidate must take the initial examination within six months (if not, the certificate expires and the course must be repeated.) If you fail the initial examination, you would then have an additional six months from the date of the first attempt to retake and pass the examination. (If a passing exam score is not achieved by the end of the six months, you would have to start PE anew and earn a new Certificate of Completion).

What is Error And Omission Insurance and how much do it normally cost for an independent insurance agent?

We Answered:

"Errors & Omissions Insurance" covers you for any mistakes you may make. As brokers, we do not make a lot of mistakes, and I have been fortunate enough to have never made a mistake I didn't catch and correct, and never a large one, but mistakes can be costly. The insured is not made to suffer an extra loss for an error made by an agent. Start with your local brokers' association for a rate for your state.
If you are employed in an insurance office, by the way, you will be covered under the office policy. If you are independent you will need an individual policy. I have never had an individual policy.

Being an independent insurance agent vs. Company insurance agent? Pros and Cons? Please answer!?

We Answered:

i went through the same thing you did. for me i think it is better to be independent because you can have the best product at all times. The only advantage i had as being a career agent was the company provided leads, but only for a limited time. then they expect you to do everyhting for yourself. If you need training because you are new in the business, i would start out as a career(company) agent and use them for the training. I get a higher contract being independent, therefore i get paid more. Some people say you are on your own being independent, that is not true, marketing company's have plenty of training and knowledge and thats where you get your contracts. i use a couple different marketing organizations for each line of products.... 1 for senior health and life, another 1 for annuities and another for major medical. they all have lead programs around 375 per 1000 mailed leads. contact me by email if you want more specific info. You dont have many choices being a career/company agent.
