I would call that an employee. She works directly for your mother. She is paid by your mother. That's an employee.

Call your mother's homeowners insurance carrier and see if they can cover domestic employees on her homeowners insurance. You also need to check the IRS rules regarding domestic employees as I believe you need to be taking out income taxes for this employee.

That might be a question for your accountant. But I would call your mothers insurance agent regarding Workers Comp insurance.

It's really tough going out there for a lot of people, and many are homeless, as well as out of work, and have no insurance, or no where to turn. It's very sad, but that seems to be the way the world is heading. I think it's very commendable that you are so caring in regards to this man. The best you can do is what you are doing now. You could discreetly contact some other social service agencies in your area, and also find out if he is a veteran, perhaps you can refer him there if he is. Other than dropping by his residence and leaving a "care basket" there is not a whole lot else you can do personally. I know it is very very difficult not to get personally involved and hurting for someone in this man's situation. I myself volunteered in at a homeless shelter cooking, and it made me really sad to see all the different kinds of people who were so down and out. Not just older men and women, but entire families that were displaced because of no work, no place to live. Some were even living in their cars in the dead of winter. The world is a sad place, a very sad place anymore. Bless you for caring so much for your fellow mankind. Too bad more were not as caring as you!
