I am not an agent, never have been an agent and wouldn't want to be an agent. I am an independent claim adjuster who deals with both independent agents and captive agents all the time. The captive agents complain a 1000 times more about their job than the independent agents do.

I get the impression that the captive agents regret taking the certain money guaranteed by the base salary. From what they tell me that base salary means Allstate or whatever company owns them and can make a captive agents life hell.

It is my understanding that as an independent agent you have more control over how you run your business and you have many more companies to sell for. This allows prospective clients to "one stop shop" for insurance through you.
