Benjamin Disraeli during the debates over the 1872 Reform Act said that Parliament had nothing to worry about in extending the voting franchise because the British people were 'inherently' conservative (with a small c). He was right.

My Father was a political activist on the 'left' throughout his life. He said that there never was a Tory government in this country that wasn't voted in by the working class. He was right.

The mechanisms by which the class structure is maintained has never changed... only the methodology.
Where once the church would tell the poor to be patient because their reward would be found in heaven... the same class are satisfied by the reward of a weekend of buying sub-standard food in supermarkets, watching semi-talented compatriots performing on television... and eating fancy foreign food manufactured in Essex.

Our education system is entirely focused on the performance of schools, and is realised through meaningless league tables. This 'conservative' method ensures the continuance of mediocre standards and the absolution for poor teaching. On a personal note... My Son is at University in spite of his schools attempts... not because of them.

The fact is... the 'Right' of British politics is content. Nothing has changed. The 'Left' of British politics is no more than a few intellectual angst ridden citizens wh can't agree on what to do because their intellectual 'rigour' is more important to them than any real political achievement.

You might call me a sceptic or even a cynic... but as a Trade union official of many years standing... I was subject to kore attack and vitriol by our members than I ever was by the employers and their political masters.

We as a working people are screwed... because we allow ourselves to be screwed.
