Yes, they are NOT required to directly pay the rental car company.

Unfortunately with your age, the vast majority of rental car companies won't rent to you. Your best bet is to call a little hole in the wall place, or ask the dealership where the car is being fixed, if they will rent a car to you, or give you a loaner.

In most cases, your own personal insurance would cover you while in a rental car as long as no one was driving your car at the time. The insurance company that you filed a claim with probably knew that your company does take care of that automatically and with no need to file paperwork even, so they did not feel the need to pay for coverage that you already have and are paying for.

As a side note, while your insurance will typically cover you while driving the rental car, most insurance companies will not cover you if you are driving a rental truck (like a U-Haul) because they consider this vehicle a non passenger vehicle and will not extend coverage to anything other than a Passenger vehicle.

There are a number of insurance companies (almost all of them) that will sell you Renter's Insurance, but why did your first insurer cancel your policy? If the cancellation was due to unpaid premiums, then that is a simple thing to fix...just pay your premiums.

Companies that write renter's insurance can be found in almost any strip mall, office park, and in the phone book. Be advised that living in Pensacola, you may be charged higher premiums than someone in Lincoln, Nebraska who has a similar rental, due to the risk of hurricanes in your area.

The insurance company only owes you a rental car until they make you a reasonable offer.They don't owe you until you get a check in hand. They don't owe you a rental until you accept their offer. Only until they make a reasonable offer to you - regardless if you accept it.

If they are providing a car longer than that...they have gone beyond their legal obligation. They would have been fully with in their rights to say..."we made you an offer today, turn that car in by 5."

They have told you your car is a total loss. So get out and start looking for a replacement. If you want to take 2 weeks to find a replacement car...that's your choice and your expense.

In the mean time....stop messing around with YA and start searching your local classifieds, autotrader.com, cars.com, carmax.com.

Check your auto policy. If you have it, it will say so. Some insurance companies do provide it, but be sure to check what is covered and the limits. Limits provided for rental cars will not exceed the coverage for your own car and this may not be acceptable to the rental company.

Also, it is almost impossible in this day and age to rent a car except with a credit card. Most major credit cards provide full coverage on a rental. But be sure you check this out in advance. A lot of rental outfits know this but will stonewall you into buying their insurance. It is a tremendous profit maker for them.
