Don Said:

Does "defective equipment" increase insurance rates?

We Answered:

Insurance rates are set by the risk your insurance company perceives when covering you. Most companies today look at even your credit report, and statistics show that those with poor credit are a risk. Likewise, those who ignore maintenance of their vehicles to the point where they get a ticket also show a higher risk. The minor things you mention that could be the cause of your defective equipment are those things more likely to get a fix it ticket, and I couldn't help but notice that despite saying what it could be, you never did say what led to the ticket.

Regardless of the thoughts of the attorney you spoke to, this is standard operating procedure for any insurance company. You can speak to a local independent agent to see if you can get the same or better coverage for less and switch, or pay the increase if you are happy where you are.

Gilbert Said:

Will my insurance rates go up if I got a ticket for driving in the HOV lane on I-95 in Broward County, FL?

We Answered:

Besides claims, the things that make your insurance go up are called 'moving violations'. These are actions that make you more of a risk, (financially speaking) to your insurance company. Some of these are speeding, DWI, unsafe lane changes, etc. They do not include things like tinted windows, parking tickets, or expired registration. So, by this reasoning, using the wrong lane would mean that this is not an action that makes you more likely to get into an accident. Do not worry about your insurance.

Patricia Said:

I got a ticket which doesn't put points on my license. Could it affect my insurance rates?

Only moving violations such as running red lights, driving under the influence, failure to yield and other things that actually have to do with your driving will affect your insurance rates.
