Canadian Real Estate Agents: Can I collect Employment Insurance (E.I.) while employed by a Real Estate agency?

We Answered:

You should call the E.I. office and ask how much you will be eligible to collect after your severance runs out. Typically one doesn't get much severance and then E.I., it's sort of one or the other. You won't technically be employed as most realtors are independent contractors, so you probably can collect whatever E.I. you would be entitled to from your previous job.

Alicia Said:

Go to your phone book, and call a few local, independent agents to get quotes.

Does anyone know about pre employment credit checks?

We Answered:

In response to a couple of the answers here, one thing to keep in mind is that Background Checks vs. Credit Checks are two different things...

Credit checks are run for two reasons:

1) In cash handling or financial (i.e. accounting) positions, they want to see your overall credit worthyness to assess your potential for fraud, theft, etc... (but still can't make too harsh of a judgment - that's what criminal background checks are for)

2) In financial & insurance institutions, they want to see your overall credit worthyness AND make sure you don't have any outstanding debts to any of their major customers (where you could potentially manipulate your own account).

For employer credit checks, they CAN NOT see your actual credit score. Typically, they will only fail you on credit based on MAJOR derogatory history, i.e. not only bankruptcy, but looking to see if you continued to not pay your debts even after a bankruptcy.

Most employers who review credit, also know that medical is an area that hits a lot of people and we tend to disregard.

You are probably fine. You just need to concentrate on passing the exam!!! Good luck!

Can you apply for EI [employment insurance] after losing a temporary job [agency job]?

We Answered:

you are technically considered an independent contractor.

even though this is not considered permanent employment, most likely they have paid unemployment insurance;

call unemployment and pose the question. a friend of mine told me about a year ago when jobs became slower or none, she applied and received benefits.

working for an agency, you get jobs as they come in. so technically you are still employed, but with the economy as it is, any jobs available maybe few and far between.

you have nothing to lose but time spent on a phone call.

good luck
