Insurance Company Rates

Jeremy Said:

Can an insurance company raise your rates even though you've completed 12 hour traffic school?

We Answered:

Sorry the violation doesn't actually disappear it goes into limbo. Nothing changes the fact it happened, the traffic school erases the points from the DMV records, but insurance companies have their own point system. Whether or not the insurance company raises your rates depends totally on the points they rate the original offence on their scale.
It is also highly dependent on how many years you have accumulated accident and conviction free on your record before the offence.

Glen Said:

Can your health insurance company raise your rates after you get sick?

We Answered:

If you're covered by GROUP insurance (through your employer, for example), your rates will NOT be raised simply because you got sick or injured. Those rates are based upon the group and while they may go up each year, they will NOT go up specifically for you.

However, if you have an individual policy, your rates could possibly be increased if you have an influx of claims. Unlike someone above me said, this is EXACTLY like car insurance. Your car insurance (which is an individual policy) is likely to go up if you have a large claim. Same thing is true of individual medical coverage. It's just a sad fact of life. When you're not part of a group plan, you are shouldering all the risk yourself. So if you incur a lot of charges, you may very well see an increase.

Mike Said:

I took traffic school, can the insurance company still jack my rates up?

We Answered:

Yes.

If it was an at fault accident - then your rates can be raised.

In many states there are two types of points -- drivers license points and insurance points.

You get in a wreck- the cop gives you a ticket. The ticket has a fine and 2 points on your license. You go to traffic school and get that reduced maybe no points at all. That's great- less points on your license.

However, that does not affect the insurance points that were assigned to you. It is still an at fault accident and that continues to follow you. Usually after 3-5 years, those drop off and the at fault accident is not held against you. But it all depends on the laws of your state and the underwriting guide lines of the insurance company involved.

Any time you have an at fault accident - you face the possibility of a rate increase in your insurance.

Your agent will be able to give you specific informaton regarding how your insurance company determines rates and how the accident affected your rates.
