There's the state website with the info. You can ALWAYS call them and ask them directly, however, it LOOKS from the website that you NEED the prelicensing course paperwork in order to take the state exam.

You could ALSO check with someone you work with, although the licensing laws HAVE recently changed.

You need a local, independent agent who will do this. Pocket bikes are a niche market, and I don't know of any companies who do them, who will write directly for an insured, bypassing an agent.

You can get a traveler's insurance but it's expensive. Usually you only get a policy if you will be in a foreign country for a minimum of 6 months. I don't recommend them. If your son's father has insurance, he can add him to his policy for the short period of time.

Yes, you can just take the pre-licensing class. I don't know if NY classes are the same as Maine, but when I took the class it was three days long. I believe in Maine they only offer the class twice a year but they may offer it more in NY. I didn't see it listed on the education calendar on this website: http://www.iiaba.net/ny/default?ContentPreference=NY&ActiveTab=STATE&ActiveState=NY but it says if you have any questions to e-mail the Education Department of the New York State Insurance Department at coned@ins.state.ny.us . They should be able to tell you when/where the next class is. Good luck!

Are you talking about people who work for other agencies, or people who own their own? First year commissions, or continuing commissions?

Most states do NOT allow you to charge BOTH a fee, AND commission - but many agents are moving to flat fee basis for commercial accounts, and writing the policies at 0 commission.
