Question about renting a car including age, insurance, credit card -- please read on?

We Answered:

Each rental company sets its own policies, so there is no generic answer that applies to every rental company in every city. You'll have to make some phone calls to be sure.

In general -

Rental companies provide the minimum insurance coverage required by law. You are responsible for any damages above and beyond that. Rental companies sell additional coverage but it is VERY expensive. The rate varies by location and coverage purchased, but it can easily cost in excess of $20 per day.

Not having a credit card can be a problem. Many companies will rent to you with just a debit card, but they will require a substantial deposit. Be sure that you verify the amount in advance so that you have enough money in your account. Otherwise, you may go to use your card and find that you've run out of cash. Hotels may also require a deposit if you don't have a credit card, so check on that, too.

Yes, you can generally rent a car if you are 24 but some companies will charge you extra. Again, it varies by rental company. Call around or check the websites of several companies and try to find a company that doesn't charge. Avis, for example, does not, but their rental rates tend to be more expensive than other companies'.

well since you are 24 i doubt they will rent to you if they are a mjor carrier. you may be able to find a small local renter that will. you must have a credit card and i do think that your debit would work, since most can be used as either. you should also be able to purchase their insurance.
