Independent Insurance Group

Dean Said:

Did congress ever let an independent group review how this healthcare bill would affect insurance premiums?

We Answered:

They are hoping we have all gone daft....Tax for 4 years and then the bill looks deficit neutral. This is cram it through politics because nothing the young prince has signed has worked. He is floundering and his lack of experience shines brightly. Laid a lot of promises on people...let his mouth exceed ability. He should try governing in the middle and not pandering so far to the left....It is unbecoming for the President to spend so much time on his knees.

Health Insurance for Independent Contractors?

We Answered:

This can be tricky, since there is only one company in CA that will work with this situation. Most local agents shy away from these types of cases because they don't know the rules, and these types of groups can be a lot of work.

However, you are on the right track in wanting to offer this. It will work if the agent knows their stuff. Look for agents who do benefits only.

What associations offer group health insurance?

We Answered:

Assocations used to do group coverage, but it didn't work out - the only people who joined were the ones that couldn't get private insurance cheaper - in other words, the really unhealthy ones. The rates got really really high, and more people dropped out, etc. Bad spiral.

So you can't join an association to get a "group" rate. The association health policies are STILL all individually underwritten and rated.

Being an insurance agent is different. NO ONE is going to give you an appointment, if you're green. You'll have to go on under another agent, or work directly for a carrier. Go to your state insurance department website for information.

Angela Said:

Do insurance agents get group health insurance?

We Answered:

Go to their website. They usually have a list of benefits the offer to their employees. For me, I sell insurance (p&c) but I don't actually work for that company. I'm an exclusive agent. So I do not get any benefits from the company.

Maternity Insurance changing jobs?

We Answered:

From what I understand, the way the system is currently set up, private health insurance is almost NEVER the right option. It is expensive and worthless, and for any reason AT ALL your insurer can drop you at the drop of a hat. What does your husband have for insurance? Is there a possibility of joining his plan? Another option may be that you continue with your current insurance, and then resign, you may be able to either negotiate a deal with your current employer to continue coverage until the baby is born OR take COBRA which sounds like it would still be less expensive than Blue Cross. Good luck and I hope you are able to make an informed decision!

Janice Said:

I am an employer that employs independent contractors. Is there a service out there that will do their taxes?

We Answered:

If you're employing independent contractors then surely THEY should be settling their own taxes? If you're employing freelance employees there are a million services that do it, just google payroll services.
