Independent Insurance Agent

Catherine Said:

How do I find a reputable independent insurance agent in NYC?

We Answered:

The easiest thing to do is to log on to a website like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a form requesting a quote. Your info will be sent to a health insurance broker in your area who will contact you. A broker works with several health insurance companies and can find the best deal for you. Brokers need referrals and a good reputation to stay in business, so they only work with reputable companies. There is no charge for the service and no obligation to buy. Good luck!

Does anyone have experience being an independent insurance agent for Aflac?

We Answered:

I worked there for 4 weeks. I did not like it at all. I came from another agency, and it was a drastic change. They just hire everyone....even if you don't have a license yet. They do not pay you anything while they train you, and they send you out with some other agent to 'learn the ropes'. You just have to go out and prospect to find people to sell to. Like another person said, they don't protect territories. You would be out selling against other AFLAC agents. This is just my personal experience. You may be an outstanding door to door, cold call agent. Another option I would suggest looking at is an actual agency or for the carrier like a United Healthcare or a Humana. Feel free to email with any other questions. Good luck in whatever route you take.

How do you become an independent insurance agent?

We Answered:

1. Get an insurance license from the state government. (Make sure to get a "life and health" license, not a "property and casualty" license, which is for a different type of insurance.)
2. Find a company willing to let you sell their policies.
3. Find clients.

How difficult is it for a new independent insurance agent to receive an appointment frm Progressive Insurance?

We Answered:

Progressive is the absolute easiest insurance company to get appointed with - they have great agent support, and no minimum amounts, and poor loss ratios won't lead them to cancel your contract.

As long as you have a written business plan and a license, and E&O coverage in place, they'll appoint you. You don't even need great credit with them.

how to become an independent all state insurance agent?

We Answered:

Sue's info is correct about independent vs exclusive agents but to answer your question call an Allstate office in your area and ask them who to talk to in the regional office about becoming an agent. Each agent has a sales manager who works for the regional office. They keep changing the names of theses mangers, from sales manager to Management Business Consultant MBC, I can't remember what they are calling them now.

The MBC can interview you and guide you through the process, depending on your background you may qualify to open your own office or they might recommend you work for another agent first.
