They cannot cancel any in-force insurance without there being a reason. What they are doing is pulling out of home owners insurance in NC. They stopped selling home owners insurance in September of last year. That is, they stopped renewing policies and stopped selling new policies in Sept 2008. They have to honor any policies already in effect. What you received is a letter of non-renewal saying that they will not renew your policy when it expires. That is not the same as a cancellation. They notified you well in advance of the expiration date of your current policy so that you have sufficient time to find replacement coverage. The state tells them how much time in advance of the expiration date that they have to tell you about the non-renewal. What you received is a certified letter from them.

Sorry but it is true. You will continue to receive any service you need from them up until the expiration date of your policy. Talk to your agent about getting replacement coverage. Since I am in a midwest branch of an insurance company, and work in commercial lines, I don't know if my company does personal insurance in NC. (We do commercial lines business in NC.)

By the way, you are probably one of the last people to have in-force insurance with them in your state since this was announced about 10 months ago.

It all depends on the specific nature of the home and of the disability.

In the US, Medicaid and Medicare will pay for groups home living if it is required to provide a certain level of treatment or supervison. Sometime the ONLY way to get the level of treatment you need is to be institutionalized - and so although you have the choice to leave - you are choosing to forego treatment. You can have a mild disability, but require a treatment that will only be provided in an institution.

If you private pay to be in an institution - you are free to leave when you chose - IF you have an approved place to go to. Some people have not been allowed to leave because they had no place to go.

Heck do not be surprise if on your next renewal it goes up another fifty dollars for reconstruction cost for your furnace. In my opinion Farmers Insurance Group is a bad company.
