General Insurance Agent

Kim Said:

What Percentage(%) of commission does a general insurance agent gets for insuring a vehicle?

We Answered:

It is going to depend upon who the agent is representing. If the agent is a captive agent such as Farmers Insurance, State Farm Insurance or Allstate Insurance the commission will be around 7.5%. An independent agent who represent several companies can expect between 10 to 15%.

The difference is due to the fact that the captive agents receive additional financial assistance from their insurance companies to help pay their business expenses. An independent agent is an independent business person and as such receives only the commission to pay all of his or her expenses.

How much generally does an insurance agent make in Indiana?

I agree with both answers you have already been given. Do you already have your license? I know of a company in Indiana that trains and pays you to learn all the insurance fields.

What do SA,Texas independent insurance agents do if your FMO,GA-General Agent wont pay your commissions?

We Answered:

You need to contact Bogdon Rentea in Austin. He is an attorney that is VERY knowledgeable in agency contracts. He should be able to advise you and help you with your needs.

He is one of "the good guys!"

Keep in mind - if you ARE in "independent" agent - you should be able to get contracts on a DIRECT basis with different companies and not be held up by a local GA.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Sheila Said:

If you work under a general agent can you sell insurance in a state you are not licesed and appointed in?

We Answered:

Not legally, but it's often done. It's not uncommon for a GA to write the policy and "bonus" the agent or find some other loophole to compensate him. It is, of course, completely illegal.
