Generally speaking (because I can't read your policy). If you are a resident of the household property off premises would be covered for theft. However, if the I-Pod was simply lost or misplaced it is not likely to be a covered loss.

But here is the real rub, the policy deductible (or excess) may be higher than the value of the I-Pod touch.

Best way to find out is to check the policy provisions, call your agent or call the company...

The travel insurance offered by Medibank Private says the following in their FAQs (and their prices are good, particularly if you're a MP member):

Can I extend my travel insurance if am still overseas?

In certain circumstances you can extend your travel insurance if you are still overseas. However, we must receive your request at least 7 days before the original policy expires if you send your request by post. All other requests to extend cover must be received by us before the original policy expiry date. The extension is subject to approval and payment of the additional premium. We can extend a policy to a maximum of 12 months, however we may offer a further 12 month policy which allows 24 months cover when run consecutively.

World Nomads is another good company which offers initial policiy terms up to 18 months. Their FAQs say:

You can extend your World Nomads cover as many times as you like but please refer to your policy wording for any restrictions that may affect your extension.
