Low Insurance Rates

Jon Said:

Looking for a good first car, one with low insurance rates preferably?

We Answered:

Get a used, moderately aged sedan. Something that is between 5-10yrs old and is a very mainstream car(i.e., not sportscar) with good safety features and reliability. Good examples include: Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, VW Jetta, etc.

I live in the Philly area and I was able to find a 16-yr-old Jetta for $1000. I wouldn't recommend something past 10 or 12 yrs old(unless it's in really good shape, or a very cheap price for its value), because there is greater likelihood of needing repairs not too far in the future. But you can definitely find something <10yrs old for $2000 if you scour the classifieds and craigslist.org. The insurance on my Jetta was only about $100/month too, which isn't too bad, considering Philly has the #1 most expensive car insurance rates of any US city(as of 2005), and I had a few speeding tickets and incidents on my driving record.

What is a car that will have low(er) insurance rates for a new 16 yr old driver??

We Answered:

The less sporty the car, the cheaper it is to insure. Four doors is cheaper than 2. When I was looking I told my dad what kind I was interested in and he got specific models quoted for insurance so we could figure out which one was the best all around.

Are there any MD fields that have little to none malpractice insurance necessity or low insurance rates ?

We Answered:

There are three doctors practicing medicine in the Houston area, who do not carry malpractice.

It's not REQUIRED, unless you want hospital priveleges.
