i know what you mean i had it last year with car hire insurance, i was hiring a car and wanted to get value instead of paying from the car hire company. i was directed to a company that i would have never have done business with and when i hired my car the insurance was no good. i fought to get my money back.
most of these companies on the compare sites are underwritten by the big players anyway so check your policy online and you might be ok.
compare sites are good but you have to be careful with them, good luck

You need to talk to someone at one of the co-op company and verify that what you want covered is ok or if there will be certain limitations such as where you live. See the article I provided. This appears to be mainly in Europe per this site, so unknown if this is better for you or not.

You might want to do a google search on complaints or call the insurance department in the UK if you have one. In the US, every state has a department of insurance that regulates insurance companies.
