It depends entirely on what bike you have and what use you put it to.
I use my bike every day for work and weekends for fun and cover about 30,000 miles a year.
As much as I enjoy this, it doesn't come cheap. Apart from the cost of the bike (£2000- £4000 for something decent) there is the cost of decent all weather clothing and a good helmet.
My jacket, gloves, boots, trousers and helmet come to about £1100 and are replaced every 3 years.
As for running costs, fuel economy is good but only from a certain perspective, I see about 55 mpg but get better performance than an impreza.
Servicing, well you might be surprised to learn they are more complex than a car and unless you are a seriously competent mechanic then you will be paying for the work to be done. I do 4 minor services a year(oil and filters £30) and pay for 1 major service( valve clearances+ minor service £350).
Then of course there is the cost of tyres, for the mileage I cover I need to replace 5 rear tyres(£130 a time) and 2 fronts(£110 a time) every year and 1 set of chain and sprockets (£110).
So all in all the answer would have to be no, bikes aren't cheaper than cars, however, you can do it cheaper but I guarantee you won't enjoy it as much.
If you do decide to ride a bike and do it cheaply, do not cut corners on clothing and tyres, these are the two things that your life depends on.
Also bear in mind the consequences of an accident on a bike, with a car you are surrounded by a metal box for protection, on a bike it's you and the car/road/tree etc.
Even with the correct bike gear on would you jump out of the back door of a van doing 80mph or stand in front of a car and allow it to hit you at speed?
If the answer is no then you are perfectly normal, none of us would, but this is what it is like if you have an accident on a bike and you need to accept the risks.

If she gave you money for a car, then you can't redirect that money towards something else--especially if she's against that something else! If you're going to buy a bike, you must do it ONLY with your own money. If you sell the car to fund a bike, then give her her 2,500 back, or use it to buy something that gets her approval.
Have you checked into all the associated costs that go with owning a motorcycle? Insurance is a huge hurdle in many cases. Plus you need good protective gear, sheltered parking, etc. It's also no way to bring a large load of groceries home. One final point: Riding a motorcycle requires a 0.00% alcohol lifestyle. One drink, and you walk, take the bus or grab a cab.

They do for the Japanese market as 400s fit the regulatory system there. the ones around the UK are usually grey imports that were never sold here.
1. Minimal as they tend to charge more for grey imports
2. Varies massively depending on the bike - also has to be certified. many that are aroud will be already done
3. About 60 mpg for the 400, 90 mpg for the 125 and 40 mpg for the car. depends a lot on how they are ridden ot driven though.
