Keep the valves adjusted as that was their weak spot other that they were great cars & do good on the highway as well. The VW will live for a LONG time so drive it home & back if you want to. Just be sure to have the valves adjusted regularly.

I have had four H2's (2003,2004,2005 &2008). The last production year was 2009.
The 2008 and 2009's were better in every way than the 2003-2007 production runs. The engine was increased from 6.0L to 6.2L, the Auto trans was changed from a 5spd to a 6spd. The interior was redone in 2008 and the seats were more comfortable.
The off road ability was excellent. the truck can climb better than anything.

if you are looking at a 2005, have the front drive train inspected. Since it is full time 4x4 the front bearings wear out and this is a 2500.00 repair. The 6.0L engine is a workhorse and should not cause you any unusual maintenance? The SUT came out in 2005 and gives you a small pickup bed. with the locking tonneau cover it was more versatile.
If you really want a H2, buy a 2008. you will LOVE it and it will have a 4 year/50k warranty so you will still have a year of warranty hopefully?

Bus travel DEFINITELY - a LOT cheaper all round (car you have pay for fuel, insurance, parking, maintenance).

Leaving any of your possession's in a car INCREASES the chance of someone breaking in and stealing your things, and then your INSURANCE will double.

As you say you can get tax relief under the HMRC mileage scheme, as can anyone who gets less than 40p per mile, see the link to work out how much you can get. You can also claim retrospectively for the last 6 tax years. For the older years you will get some interest on your claim on top of the tax relief.

You used to be able to claim on an actual basis for the costs of running your car but this has now been discontinued so the approved scheme is the only way to go. Unless you have a car that is particularly expensive to run the actual scheme is unlikely to have allowed you to claim more under the HMRC scheme though.

The tax rates haven't gone up for more than 6 years though so the tax relief you get is getting proportionately smaller.
