I agree, be careful of entering too much personal information. Most company's sites will just ask general questions and then provide an approximated cost. If it peaks your interest, then you may need start a detailed processing. Your rates can deviate if it is later determined that you have any tickets or citations in the past say 5 years. They may even research prior insurance companies you have had.

You will regret not taking the time to look at online quotes and call the local companies! What is good and cheap for other people may not be the cheapest for you. Their situations, records, credit, etc is different than yours. Also, as for switching to a company like Geico or Progressive - call some local body shops, tell them you are shopping for insurance and want their knowledge - I guarantee most of them will say that they would rather deal with SF than with Geico or Progressive.

With today's economy, of course you have to save as much as you can - but, please make sure you feel comfortable with the new company you go to and that they gave you an apples for apples quote for your coverage with State Farm.
