You might not like this answer, but there quite simply is not an insurer out there that gives cheap rates to young drivers. The claims they get from under 25 year old drivers are crippling them financially. Those that do still insure young drivers, (and they are getting fewer and fewer), are forced to charge high prices to reflect the risk involved, and many insurers are only accepting them in the hope that they get business from other members of the family who are over 25 and will bring the number of claims that company experiences down.

Driving on your parent's insurance will bring the cost down slightly, but insurers are getting wise to that and are charging people based on the age of additional named drivers. There is also the issue that if you do make a claim and are not the policy holder, the insurer may challenge the claim if they feel that you are the main user of the car.

The only way you can get the price down is to get some driving experience and no claims discount behind you, but to do that, you need insurance in your own name at the price that you are reluctant to pay. I appreciate that you have said that you have tried the price comparison web sites, and are not happy with their response, but that seems to be your only option, as whilst they are all expensive, you can at least choose the least expensive.

You have found out that insurance for an 18 year old male driver is very, very expensive. If the best quote you have found is £2,660, then that's the cheapest out there.

There are no young driver specialists.

If the car is really yours and you are really the main driver then you and Mum are committing insurance fraud. This is called "Fronting" - see the bbc news link below for independent details of the world of hurt you are opening yourself up to. if you try to claim there is a good chance you will be detected. if stopped by the Police they do have ways to find out and know full well what to watch for.

My guess is that you are fronting as you called it your insurance. The problem you have is that the car is too large and engine for a teen to get cover on at a reasonable price. Trying to run before you can walk. You need to be in a 1.0 to 1.2 litre motor with no mods
