Car Insurance Uk

Duane Said:

How can visitors to the UK get car insurance?

We Answered:

Out of 100 non Brits get into an accident when driving in Britain on the first 6 months at the rate of 35%.

Also, (and for the same reason) British people driving in France can get into big crashes, due to them forgetting they are in France.
Scenario: Simply get into the car, forget you are in France, drive off and SPLAT! Head on into some big truck.
Next time you are in france, remember to drive on the "wrong side of the road".

This still happens to me after about 2 million miles traveled between the UK and Europe over 30 years.
When I go back and fro into the UK and into Europe, it is a practice of mine that when I get into the car/truck/van motorcycle the next thing I do after adjusting the mirror and turning engine on is just stop, think: "which side of the road am I driving?" ah now I now. Off I go.
Seems stupid but it is 100% necessary.

To answer your question, an European licence is valid for a year in the UK.
Find an insurance that know their rules. Usually they know this. I drove in the UK with a German licence for more than a year and that was 25 years ago.
However, your friend can apply for an International driving licence (in his country).

Amber Said:

Car insurance in UK with american licence?

We Answered:

There are conditions that apply to foreign licence holders in the UK. Depending on the country, you can simply exchange your licence for a UK one but as your is not one of the designated countries - you will not be able to.

However, you will be able to drive in thw UK on your full, valid driving licence for up to 12 months from the time you first become resident.

Some points to remember are:

you will need to stop driving once the 12 months are over OR

if you wish to continue driving in the UK you will need to get a UK provisional driving licence and sit a theory and practical driving test.

Adding to that - Most insurance companies will therefore treat you as a new driver with no "no-claims" bonus and subsiquently you'll be charged quite a few pounds.
Better to stick to a small engined car until you build up your no claims.

My daughter recently passed her test and after much shopping around, we found that Tesco Insurance was the cheapest.
They offered a discount for "Pass plus" which the others - although stated on their website they would offer - don't!

Cathy Said:

UK Car insurance, can you add people to it before the policy runs out or do you have to wait til' it runs out?

We Answered:

You can change anything with your policy within it's time period, and if you're a younger driver I would even recommend adding experienced drivers as it may even lower your premium. You may have to pay a small admin fee, but if you get a saving you won't care!

Sonia Said:

is it possible for me to get temporary UK car insurance on my mums car, whilst my mum already has a policy?

We Answered:

If you wwere over 23 you could get temp insurance even if she has cover on it.
You cannot get temp cover that lasts for 3 months - 1 month max and once a year on the same car
The only way to do this is to be a named driver on Mums insurance as it would be cheaper that if you could do 2 days a week for 13 weeks
