Car Insurance Australia

Shane Said:

Car insurance for driving in australia?

We Answered:

strictly speaking no: there is basic third-party injury insurance included in the road tax ('rego') so if you hurt or kill someone else, you are covered.

However it is a very good idea to have cover for damaging someone else's car or your car as you would be totally liable for these things.

Is the future of ING safe enough in Australia to take out a car insurance policy with them?

We Answered:

I would go for one of the more established ones. I don't know which state you are in. There is always NRMA in New South Wales which offers road services as well. RACQ does the same in Queensland as does RACV in Victoria.

I know very little about ING other than it is Dutch in origin. One thing I do know is that they do not offer the roadside services. However the ones above do offer home and contents insurance along with your motor car and caravan and boat insurance as you acquire all of these things throughout life.

RACQ

RACV

Also this is AAMI Car Insurance. They do offer Home and contents insurance along with a whole lot of other insurance products but no road side services I don't think.

Then there are the ones like REAL and Budget Direct.

The web site for real didn't show.

I hope that this is of some help to you. Happy driving.

Cheers!!!

Car Insurance In Australia - Good VS Bad?

We Answered:

there is literally hundreds of car insurance companies.

whether a company is "good" or "bad" in someone's opinion really depends on what that persons expectations of their insurance policy was, versus the actual reality of the fineprint and what they are covered for.

the biggest issue with people and their insurance policies is at claim time - when the person doesn't understand what they were covered for, or expects that they are covered for more than they have actully paid for, or they haven't read the fineprint - and this misunderstanding causes grief for all concerned.

do yourself a favour and decide whats important to you - ie, is it the price?
is it how well the company is known?
is it that you can choose your own repairer?
is that you can choose to insure your car for a certain amount, instead of market value?
is it that you get a lower excess?
is it that anyone is covered while driving your car?
is it that you get a free rental car when you have a prang?
is it that you get a free windscreen replacement?
is it that you can walk into an office rather than speak to someone over the phone?
is it that you get free cover for contents inside your vehicle if it gets broken into?

all these type of things can impact who you choose to go with because not all companies offer all of those features. and obviously something that is a 'must have' for one person is not necessarily important to the next.

insurance is about what is suited to you and your circumstances. just because a policy didn't suit one person, doesn't mean it won't suit you.

Is the future of ING safe enough in Australia to take out car insurance policy with them?

We Answered:

I actually work for a competitor, but I will happily tell you that ANY Australian insurer is a pretty safe bet. Australia now has the toughest insurance regulation anywhere in THE WORLD. I assume you are referring to the HIH collapse some years ago... times have changed a LOT since then

ING may or may not be thinking of withdrawing from the Aussie market... but under current laws they still have to keep assets in Australia sufficient to cover any liabilities.

There are proposals under discussion for a Compensation Scheme in Australia which will guarantee insurers the same as we have in the UK (yeah I'm a Pom working in Aus), but that's probably a year or two off yet.

That aside, please take some comfort from the tough requirements in Oz.... dealing with this kind of thing is how I make my humble living and I would have no hesitation buying car insurance from ANY APRA authorised insurer.
