You can purchase a nonowners liability policy that will transfer to the rental but it will be expensive (about as much is if you owned an older car that needed liability only). This will transfer, but you will still need to purchase the comprehensive & collision coverage from the rental car company because a nonowner policy is liability only.

Does your sports group have an "on-going" liability policy" If so, that should cover you irregardless of WHERE you are playing!

No, just go to your local phone book, and look up "insurance agent". I'd opt for a local, independent agent. If they can't get it for you, they can refer you to someone who can.

There are probably THOUSANDS of agents in LA. You COULD start with the guy who sells you your car insurance.

There really is no generic answer to your question.

Insurance varies widely from state to state. In some states, insurance companies will not cover them - even if the same company covers them in a different state!

Does your dog have a bite history? If not, your best chance would be to add your dog to your renter's or home owner's insurance, or purchase an umbrella policy covering your dog with the same company. I would call your renter's or home owner's insurance company and ask whether you can add the dog to your existing policy.

If you don't currently have insurance, I would phone some of the insurance companies servicing your area and asking them whether they will cover your dog. Some insurance companies that have local agents will insure breeds that are commonly on the "banned" list, if the agent is able to meet the dog and determine that the dog is friendly. If you're not lucky with any of the big companies, I would try that route.

We have renter's insurance that covers our German Shepherd under the liability clause, up to $30,000 in case someone gets hurt by her. We are also insured separately for our therapy dog work through a therapy dog organization - however, that insurance only covers us while at work.

And to the person who said, "Train your dog instead" - that was just an ignorant comment. Getting insurance on your dog is a responsible thing to do, no matter how well trained the dog is. It's an insurance against accidents happening - whether that's someone getting hurt because your dog bites them (and all dogs can bite under the right circumstances!), or if someone gets hurt by your dog in another way - such as your dog plowing into them while running, for example.
