First of all, I would be a little suspicious of broad statements like the one you heard. It’s not that the price quoted is necessarily false, but it doesn’t tell you much about the kind of coverage they’re offering.. Living in New York state, you cannot be turned down for coverage based on your medical history (in other states you could be), but coverage there can sometimes be more expensive than in other places around the country.

These kinds of plan won’t cover doctor’s office visits, checkups, prescription drugs, etc. What they do cover is hospital charges – the kinds of charges you’re likely to face if you have a serious illness or injury that requires hospitalization. So, plans like this do provide a valuable layer of protection against certain scenarios, but you’ll need to decide if this is the kind of coverage you want, or if you’re looking for something broader.
