Always check with your broker or insurer when you take on new staff whatever the criteria

Yes, you do need this cover by law for anyone you employ. The number of hours they work per week is irrelevant.Also note :
If you are a limited company, everyone is classed as an employee, including you and other family members.
If you are not a limited company and the company is only in your name, some family members could also be classed as employees, dependent on their relationship to you (see below)
Family businesses - if all of your employees are closely related to you (as husband, wife, civil partner, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, stepfather, stepmother, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, stepson, stepdaughter, brother, sister, half-brother or half-sister) then you do not need Employers Liability Insurance to cover them.

Of course they do. Contractually with BMW, legally with their staff and as part of their other insurances they must have liability insurance for staff and visitors. A valid insurance certificate must be displayed in the workplace / premises and you will be able to inspect it. There is a different issue here in that depending on your age, Health and Safety Law would dictate a specific Risk Assessment for you being on the premises as an employee, even if only temporarily. This would have to cover your access to areas normally not accessible to the public and might necessitate your being supervised at all times. If the BMW showroom accepts you for work experience you can be pretty sure they have everything in place and will be able to provide your school with insurance details and any required Risk Assessments. You can buy it pretty cheap as an endorsement to some general liability policies, if you also have a separate "workers compensation" policy. But for the most part, employers liability is sold in combination with workers compensation coverage, and for a plumber, you can expect to pay $1500 at a minimum, for workers comp for your employees.The agent that writes your general liability coverage can give you the rate and minimum premium in your state.

Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement, but employers liability is, and they are legally required to display the certificate. Very few businesses are exempt from this requirement. I can only think of one reason for not having the certificate on display, and that is that they don't have the cover! You have no legal right to check with Insurers. Your only real option is to contact the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and tell them about your concerns, but your employers will probably realise that any investigation has been promoted by you.
