Commercial Insurance Careers

Zachary Said:

Is becoming a Farmer's Insurance Agent a good career choice?

We Answered:

If you are as good or better as you must have been selling real estate, then yes, go for it. But as mbrcatz says, the commissions will not come to you. You must find them continuously, get constant referrals, and sell, sell, sell. And in this market where people don't have a job, good luck.

Irene Said:

What could be some challenges of starting a career as an Insurance Agent in my early 40's? If any?

We Answered:

This was similar to my scenario, except that I had no sales experience. Your experience will certainly serve you well, but likely not enough to hurdle other issues. The main problem with starting at this age is that you may have too large of an income requirement. One of the major requirements for success is the ability and tenacity to starve for 2-3 years until your business becomes viable. If you have dependents, I would not recommend it if you don't have at least a year's income saved to fall back on or a spouse who earns enough to cover the entire household budget.

Depending on the nature of your business, if you are building a franchise agency, the sponsoring company will have a financing plan.
